In May 2024, three Chinese Bishops—Archbishop Li Shan of Beijing, Bishop Li Suguang of Nanchang (Jiangxi Province), and Bishop Luo Xuegan of Suifu—visited Stockholm, where they concelebrated Mass with Cardinal Arborelius and afterwards gave a presentation to the faithful on the work of the Church and the role of faith in Chinese society. It later came to light that all three bishops belonged to the Communist-sanctioned Bishops’ Conference of the Catholic Church in China (BCCCC), not approved by the Vatican. When some of the faithful complained, Cardinal Arborelius responded saying that the apostolic nuncio had backed and approved the visit.
