Cardinal Hollerich finds that “the concept of nature” in Humanae Vitae to be “problematic.” He adds: “We know now that the pill is not the best thing for women. But in medicine there are always side-effects and yet no one would call medicine unnatural.” He believes the Church’s approach to sexual ethics and related pastoral care needs to evolve in light of societal changes since the encyclical was issued.
