“There are still open theological questions here that need to be deepened”, Cardinal Koch said prior to the publication of Amoris Laetitia, adding that the problem is very complex and far from producing any concrete solution; he pointed, among other things, to the question of the relationship between the canonical validity of a marriage and the conviction of the faithful, in whose judgment the marriage may not have been valid.
