In the 1990s, Cardinal Koch said a female priesthood is “desirable, for only then would the ecclesiastical office reach the full form of the sacramental sign of the universal priesthood.” Later he stated that Catholic Church is assured that “the sacramental priesthood is linked to the male sex”.
