On the one hand, Cardinal O’Malley has said that “the Church will not change her teaching on the indissolubility of marriage.” On the other hand, he has praised Amoris Laetitia, the papal document opening the door to Communion for the divorced and civilly remarried. In the cardinal’s words, the text challenges us to “enter into the reality of other people’s lives and to know the power of tenderness.” It is ambiguous whether the cardinal’s words are meant to be an endorsement of Communion for the divorced and civilly remarried, however.
