Although Cardinal Parolin has described the encyclical as “prophetic” in foreseeing ethical challenges to traditional family structures, he also took part in a book presentation held by those who would like to see the Church change Humanae Vitae’s teaching on contraception. Parolin’s implicit support for the book along with his lack of support for Fra’ Matthew Festing or Cardinal Raymond Burke and their strong positions against the distribution of large numbers of contraceptives by the Order of Malta in 2016 heighten the possibility that he would like to see the teaching revisited.
