In 2009 Cardinal Schönborn strongly criticized some of his predecessors for lacking the courage to speak out against birth control and blaming them in part for the declining birth rate in Europe. However, in 2018 he allowed the official website of the Austrian bishops and his own diocesan website to publish a series of articles reassessing the encycical and undermining Humanae Vitae’s teaching on contraception.
