In his 2010 pastoral letter Why Priests?, Cardinal Eijk has explained why he believes celibacy is inseparable from the priesthood. And in a 2018 interview, Eijk explicitly stated: “With [the implementation of ‘viri probati’], priestly celibacy would be lost, [and with it], a splendid and fruitful centuries-long tradition of the Latin Church.”
