Cardinal Ouellet on Ordaining Female Deacons

In 2008, Cardinal Ouellet cited John Paul II as having reached a “definitive” conclusion on the question, and in October 2018, he reaffirmed that position, opposing the “pretension” on behalf or on the part of women “to that which is for ministers in the sacerdotal sense.” In 2021 he said that men and women should not be “placed completely on the same level from the point of view of ministry, because of the symbolic scope to the sacramental roles.”
